Working on Malaysia Day 2026: What the Employment Act Pays You, and the RM4,000 Line That Switches It Off
Malaysia Day falls on Wednesday 16 September 2026, and it is one of only five public holidays the Employment Act 1955 makes compulsory by name. If your employer requires you to work that day, section 60D(3) says you get your holiday pay plus two days' wages at the ordinary rate, and it applies even if you work one hour. Overtime beyond your normal hours on that day is at least three times your hourly rate. But the First Schedule to the same Act switches section 60D(3) off entirely for anyone whose wages exceed four thousand ringgit a month, unless they fall into one of five listed categories, and the Act does not extend to Sabah or Sarawak at all. Sate Kajang and the Klang Valley's Satay Shops 2026: What a Stick Really Costs, and the Rest Day Nobody Warns You About
Kajang is where Malaysians drive for satay, but almost nobody checks the price before they sit down. We read eight Klang Valley satay operators' own channels on 10 September 2026 and found a chicken stick costs RM1.70 at Sate Kajang Hj Samuri and RM2.00 at Satay Putera Kajang two kilometres away, a 30 sen gap that inverts on mutton, where Putera is the cheaper of the two. The drinks gap is wider than the satay gap: Hj Samuri's cheapest glass is RM2.30 and every drink at Putera is RM5.90. Five of the eight close one day a week, on three different days, and one of them closes on Wednesdays, which is Malaysia Day this year. Only one Hj Samuri branch out of sixteen is actually in Kajang, and six are highway rest stops.
Nando's Is Giving Away Free 1/4 Chicken on Three Days in a Row, and All Three Run on Different Rules
Nando's Malaysia has three separate free 1/4 Chicken offers running on 9, 10 and 11 September 2026, and they are published in two different places on its own site with nothing linking them. Tuesday is the Pavilion ELITE KL reopening, capped at 50 portions. Wednesday is the new Coalfields Retail Park outlet in Sungai Buloh, capped at 100. Friday is nationwide, uncapped in the terms, and needs you to invent a promo code out of a dialect word for chicken. We read all three sets of terms, the full menu and the restaurant locator, and priced what each one actually costs you: RM7.90 on the first two days, as little as RM4.50 on the third. Re-checked on the afternoon of 9 September: Nando's has now flipped the Pavilion outlet to "Everyday 10am-10pm" on its own locator, Coalfields is still not on it at all, and a second Selangor branch has quietly gone dark.
Where to Eat in Miri 2026: Three of the Eight Have a Weekly Rest Day, and the Highland Food Is the Reason to Come
Miri is not a smaller Kuching. It is Sarawak's northern oil town and the road head for the Baram and the Kelabit Highlands, and its best-loved kitchen serves Orang Ulu food you will not find on a peninsular menu: nuba laya wrapped in leaves, purple highland rice, jungle midin by the plateful. The thing that will actually decide your day, though, is not the afternoon gap everyone warns about. It is the rest day. Three of these eight close on a fixed day each week, and Google's summary line does not show it: The Summit Cafe on Sundays, Meng Chai Seafood on Thursdays, Saberkas Night Market on Mondays and Tuesdays. We opened the day-by-day hours for eight Miri eating places on 6 September 2026, along with trading status and what diners report spending, and found that the most-repeated claim about one of them - that Mat Kolok closes at 3pm - is its Sunday time, not its weekday one.

Perbadanan Putrajaya publishes an hourly rate card for its Taman Pancarona sports complex, and it settles a question most Klang Valley councils never answer in public. A sepak takraw court is RM2 an hour in daylight. A netball field is free, all day, every day, with no night rate at all because there are no lights. A football field is RM70 in the day, RM140 at night and RM200 on a public holiday night, which is nearly three times the daytime price. We also read the opening hours of six Putrajaya parks on 10 September 2026 and found one that closes every Monday and shuts for lunch on the days it does open, and one that Perbadanan Putrajaya lists as a public park but Google has no venue record for at all.
Dying Without a Will in Malaysia 2026: Your Spouse Does Not Get Everything, and Sabah Uses a Different Rulebook
If a non-Muslim Malaysian dies without a will leaving a spouse, children and one surviving parent, section 6 of the Distribution Act 1958 gives the spouse one quarter, the children one half and the parent one quarter. Almost nobody expects the third name on that list. Cross the sea to Sabah and the same family is governed by a different statute, the Intestate Succession Ordinance 1960, under which the spouse takes one third, the children take the rest and the surviving parent takes nothing at all. We read both texts in full on 9 September 2026, along with the Small Estates (Distribution) Act 1955. Three things in them are almost never reported: the parent's share, a Sabah rule that reduces a married daughter's portion by whatever her parents settled on her at her marriage, and a definition of "child" that quietly excludes children adopted under the wrong one of Malaysia's two adoption laws.
